Heat Exchangers: Cooling Towers

Heat Exchangers: Cooling Towers

0.48 hr. Online Course

Level: Advanced

Item#: RVI-11076

SME: Jim Taube

Many industrial and commercial processes produce large quantities of heat that need to be removed from the process. This heat is typically removed by transferring it into a stream of cool water. After the transfer, the heated water is often re-cooled in a cooling tower. A cooling tower is a liquid-to-air heat exchanger that rejects heat to the atmosphere.

This course will discuss the operating principles of cooling towers. It will also cover different cooling tower designs, some basic operating guidelines, and factors that affect the quality of the circulating cooling water.
Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the operation of a basic cooling water system
  • Explain the difference between natural draft and mechanical draft cooling towers
  • Describe a typical shutdown and startup procedure for one cell of a multicell cooling tower
  • Cite examples of typical operator checks for cooling towers
  • Explain the effects of suspended and dissolved solids on cooling water systems
  • Describe how problems caused by suspended and dissolved solids can be minimized
  • Explain how to minimize microorganism growth in cooling water
