Environmental concerns are not new to humanity - they date back as long as there is recorded history. Civilizations have had to deal with pollution in many different forms, especially as societies began to grow and cities became more densely populated. The modern-day green movement in the United States can be traced back to the early 1970's with the beginning of the Earth Day movement and the founding of the Environmental Protection Agency, EPA. These efforts have been an attempt to draw attention to the impact humans have on the health and resources of the planet, and the importance of working toward sustainable living and development so future generations can continue to thrive here on earth.
 
This course will take a detailed look at the many environmental advantages of ready mix concrete and how it is playing a growing role in green building design and construction. Participants will come away with a better understanding of how ready mix concrete can be used to minimize the environmental impact associated with construction and day-to-day building operations. They will be introduced to the life cycle methodology and shown how ready mix concrete contributes to earning LEED certification.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss how to integrate a life cycle perspective when considering green buildings
  • Describe concrete's unique environmental advantages in energy efficiency, material resources and sustainable site considerations

Tien Peng, LEED AP BD+C, CGP, PMP, is NRMCA's vice president, sustainability. Based in Seattle, he provides input to building codes and green protocols making design professionals and policy makers aware of concrete as a durable, long-lasting material that meets the needs of sustainable strategies. This includes the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating system, IBC, ASHRAE, ASTM, and the International Green Construction Code.
 
Tien is a long-time advocate of sustainability, promoting green building and social responsibility to various industries from housing to microfinance to community planning. Prior to joining NRMCA, he consulted with private and non-profit organizations on operational excellence as a way to sustainability and profitability. He also spent over a decade in the building design and construction industry creating green homes, communities and commercial buildings.
 
Tien advised the Washington State Legislature on building code adoption as a member of the State Building Code Council. He also facilitated the creation of the LEED Homes rating system for the US Green Building Council (USGBC) as well as current versions of the WA BuiltGreen program, and the Evergreen Development Standard. He currently serves on the ASTM E60 Sustainability Committee, the ANSI Green Globes consensus body and the new Concrete Sustainability Council.
 
Tien holds a master of architecture from the University of Houston and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His professional accreditations include LEED AP BD+C, Certified Sustainable Building Advisor (CSBA), Certified Green Professional (CGP) from the National Association of Home Builders, Project Management Professional (PMP), and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (LSSGB).
