Safe lockout/tagout begins long before a lock is applied. In this interactive gamified course, learners step into realistic industrial environments where they must identify and correct workplace hazards before beginning the formal LOTO process. Through a combination of drag-and-drop challenges,  hazard hunts, and scenario-based decision making, players demonstrate their ability to recognize unsafe conditions, assess risks, and take corrective action prior to equipment shutdown and energy isolation.

Learners progress through increasingly complex scenarios involving conveyors, pneumatic systems, confined spaces, and bypassed safety interlocks. By inspecting environments, answering hazard-based questions, and selecting proper corrective actions, players reinforce critical pre-LOTO safety behaviors in an engaging, game-based format. Hints, scoring, and achievement badges encourage replayability while rewarding strong safety performance. This course emphasizes hazard awareness, preparation, and safe decision making to help learners understand that effective lockout/tagout starts before shutdown ever begins.
Course Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify hazards and unsafe conditions that must be addressed before beginning the lockout/tagout (LOTO) process.
  • Distinguish between pre-LOTO preparation activities and formal LOTO execution steps.
  • Apply appropriate corrective actions to eliminate or control hazards prior to equipment shutdown and servicing.
  • Demonstrate proper pre-job planning practices, including PPE verification, permit review, and hazard communication.
  • Evaluate increasingly complex workplace scenarios and make safe decisions.
