Heat Exchangers: Operation of Shell and Tube Types

Heat Exchangers: Operation of Shell and Tube Types

0.5 hr. Online Course

Level: Advanced

Item#: RVI-11078

SME: Jim Taube

Heat exchangers are indispensable to the operation of many industrial and commercial processes. They provide the ability to transfer heat between two fluid streams.

One of the most common types of heat exchangers is the shell and tube type. This course starts with a brief review of the construction of a shell and tube type of exchanger. It also covers general start-up and shut-down guidelines, and some of the problems that can occur when operating shell and tube heat exchangers, including fouling, tube leaks, scaling, and air binding.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • List the steps for starting up a shell and tube heat exchanger
  • List the steps for shutting down a shell and tube heat exchanger
  • Describe general operator responsibilities associated with the operation of a shell and tube heat exchanger
  • List some causes of fouling
  • List some causes of tube leaks
  • Describe the effect of trapped gas on a heat exchanger
