Subsurface Utility Engineering - Part 1: Understanding SUE

Subsurface Utility Engineering - Part 1: Understanding SUE

4 hrs. Online Course

Level: Fundamental

Item#: RV-7206

SME: Van Singer, P.E.

This 4-hour interactive online course discusses existing utility locations on design/construction projects. The course begins with a discussion of traditional utility mapping and then presents subsurface utility engineering techniques. The discussion details the steps taken by subsurface utility engineering consultants during the development of accurate underground utility maps for a project. Also, the use of test holes are explored to enable definitive determinations as to whether an existing utility is in conflict with the new construction or not. The course discusses the liability incurred by the subsurface utility engineering consultants and the liability relief provided to the client, the owner and the utility agency.

This course includes a multiple choice test at the end.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, you will:
  • Be informed of the way utility systems have been placed on construction plans for more than a century.
  • Understand why traditional utility mapping is often incomplete and inaccurate.
  • Be familiar with the terms 'designating', 'locating' and 'data management', which are commonly used to list the phases of subsurface utility engineering projects. Other commonly used terms will also be presented.
  • Be familiar with the equipment used during the performance of each phase of subsurface utility engineering work.
  • Understand what to consider when selecting a subsurface consultant, and be able to determine where designating services are needed.
  • Be knowledgeable in utility impact analysis and how to develop the next phase, the test hole program.
  • Be familiar with the preparation and presentation of the designating and test hole data.
  • Be aware of the liability accepted by the subsurface utility engineering consultant.
  • Understand the importance of reviewing the final data to ensure the subsurface consultant fulfilled the scope.
