Because every occupation has potential safety hazards, it is important to be aware of safety issues. This course covers the following common safety issues associated with the workplace: safe work habits, personal protective equipment, hazard communication, and fire safety.
Course Objectives
Topic I: Safe Work Habits
• List conditions that can affect a worker's fitness for duty.
• Identify good housekeeping practices that promote workplace safety.
• Describe safety concerns associated with the proper use of tools and ladders.
• Explain how to safely lift heavy objects.
• State methods for isolating energy sources.
• Describe the steps for responding to electrical shock.
 
Topic II: Personal Protective Equipment
• List types of personal protective equipment commonly used to protect workers on the job.
• Name types of personal protective equipment that may be required for special hazards.
• Identify types of fall protection.
 
Topic III: Hazard Communication
• Describe the types of information found on Safety Data Sheets.
• Compare the colors and numbers used on a fire diamond.
• Describe warning labels and signs that may be used to communicate information about hazards in a workplace.
 
Topic IV: Fire Safety
• Describe basic steps for responding to a fire.
• Compare the uses of different classes of fire extinguishers.

David Chitester Photo
David Chitester is a licensed P.E. in Michigan and Florida has over 35 years of experience. He graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. He also has an M.B.A that he received from Northern Michigan University in 1978. 
 
David Chitester began his career with Bechtel Power and Blount Brothers where he gained field construction experience on projects ranging from $150 million to $500 million. For more than 30 years, he has provided services essential to a balanced mix of public and private sector clients. Mr. Chitester's expertise has been applied to multi-million dollar hotels and resorts, industrial process plants, power generating facilities, office and commercial buildings. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and his background includes a number of years on active construction sites.
