This Course provides a summary of the significant changes, for chapters 5-8 of the 2014 National Electrical Code®. With every new edition of the NEC, some of the changes include new requirements to sections, while some of the changes include entirely new articles. Some changes are revisions to existing requirements while others are deletions to some existing requirements. To view these changes in detail, please take the “2014 NEC Changes” courses.

Although not required, it is recommended to have a copy of the 2014 NEC manual for reference, especially when reviewing information in large tables. Chapter 5 covers Special Occupancy, the first of three NEC chapters dealing with special topics.

A Special Occupancy is a location where the facility or use of the physical facility creates specific conditions that require additional measures to ensure the “practical safeguarding of people and property” consistent with the purpose of the NEC.

The second special topic, Special Equipment, is covered in Chapter 6 and covers Special Equipment which includes electric signs and outline lighting. This is the second of three NEC chapters that deal with special topics.

Special Equipment
is equipment that, by the nature of its use, construction, or by its unique nature creates a need for additional measures to ensure the mission of the NEC “Safeguarding of people and property”.

The last of the special topics, Special Conditions, is covered in Chapter 7. A Special Condition is a situation that doesn’t fall under the category of Special occupancies or Special Equipment, but creates a need for additional measures consistent with other NEC Chapters whose aim is to ensure the safeguarding of people and property.

Chapter 8 of the NEC covers the wiring requirements for communications systems such as telephones, radio and TV antennas, satellite dishes, closed-circuit television (CCTV) and cable TV (CATV) systems, as well as network-powered and broadband-powered Communications systems.
