The webinar starts with a brief introduction to how commercial building codes are developed in the United States and how to determine which specific codes are relevant for different types of construction, building uses, and regional conditions. Next, the webinar offers a detailed review of the critical provisions of current building fire codes, along with a step-by-step checklist for the building professional to follow when designing or managing commercial buildings. Finally, the lesson identifies a number of free online resource for easy access to important fire code information.

Course Objectives
By the end of this presentation, you will be able to:
  • Review the basic structure of fire codes related to commercial roof and wall systems and how specific codes are established by state and local jurisdictions to keep building occupants safe and assure the welfare of neighborhoods and communities.
  • Determine the applicable fire code for specific states and cities in the U.S. using available on-line tools.
  • Identify and apply the key principles of modern fire safety to identify fire code requirements for commercial roofs and walls to assure overall safety for building occupants and the community.
  • Discuss the level of construction required to assure community welfare for a variety of commercial and institutional applications using available on-line resources.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: James Hoff
Jim Hoff is an experienced executive and consultant in the building materials industry. Jim currently serves as President of TEGNOS Research, Inc. a consulting organization dedicated to expanding understanding of the building envelope. Since the founding of TEGNOS, Dr. Hoff has provided a wide variety of strategic and technical consulting services to dozens of governmental, non-profit and corporate organizations, and recent clients have included the U.S. Department of Energy, the U. S. EPA, building material trade associations, building materials manufacturers, building envelope designers and private equity firms. In addition to his industry research and consulting activity, Dr. Hoff also serves as the instructor for the successful "Commercial Roofing Boot Camp" course co-sponsored by Building Envelope Magazine. Jim has published numerous papers addressing a variety of technical and business topics germane to the building envelope industry and is a frequent speaker at building envelope, sustainability, and energy efficiency conferences.
