Traditions of designing and building with earthen materials have a long history of sustainability throughout the world. More has been written about building with adobe than about any other alternative construction material or method. Meanwhile, cob is probably the oldest earth-building system, and the simplest.

This 4-hour interactive online course takes a close look at these two alternative construction materials. For both adobe and cob, it covers history, design considerations, and environmental benefits. The student will review code requirements, stabilization methods and new research associated with adobe, as well as construction methods tied to cob. This is part of a series on Alternative Construction: Contemporary Natural Building Methods.

This course includes a multiple-choice test at the end of each section.
