Jim possesses degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University in New York and Electrical Power Technology from Bismarck State College.
 
He has extensive industrial experience with 23 years in the pulp and paper industry and 12 years in institutional and pharmaceutical facility management.
 
His responsibilities have included engineering design, electrical and mechanical maintenance, and power plant utilities management.
 
Areas of expertise include HVAC design, commissioning and qualification, construction administration, and energy cost savings initiatives.
 
Jim’s credentials include being registered as a Professional Engineer and the Certified Energy Manager and Auditor certifications.

I found this course to be too idealistic

I found this course to be too idealistic. BIM offers a vast number of possibilities, but the majority of projects do not lend to complete integration. Most of the time the contractor and subs are not brought into a project until after bid, in which case integrating schedule and cost estimation does not happen during design. Cost estimation is not accurate using BIM technology unless the designers are including materials to the n'th degree. A very high level of BIM modeling would be required, such as at the shop drawing level, which also would not happen until the project has been fully designed for most projects. Plus the cost for the design team to model to that level would be too great for most clients to accommodate. Structural analysis also still requires multiple models. Unless it is a very simple building, trying to create one model that speaks to both the analysis and the Revit software just isn't realistic at this point in time. The architectural nuances create too many errors if attempting a perfectly modeled analysis BIM model, and if transporting the model out into Revit to use for the drafting side, it takes too long to make all the minute adjustments that it's easier to start from scratch in Revit. It would have been nice to hear from someone who works in the consulting world with the types of projects and types of project delivery systems most of us use and be frank about the benefits and challenges BIM technology creates and how to mitigate our risks as design consultants.
