This course provides a focused review of foundational changes and general requirements introduced in the 2026 National Electrical Code. Learners will examine code-wide updates, new and deleted articles, revised Article 100 definitions, and the role of specific permission throughout the Code. The course also explains how NEC chapters function together as an integrated system and addresses key concepts such as energy storage systems, power control systems, interconnection equipment, GFCI types, receptacle outlets, and wiring devices.

The course also reviews important updates to general installation requirements that affect labeling, servicing, working space, equipment markings, short-circuit current ratings, and compliance. Topics include the removal of Annex J, the relationship between NEC requirements and manufacturer product instructions, connections of dissimilar metals, high-leg delta markings, revised arc-flash labeling, equipment servicing, reconditioning, the definition of “within sight,” and general requirements for connections over 1,000 volts.

By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to interpret and apply key 2026 NEC foundational and general requirement changes in real-world electrical installations.
Course Objectives
After successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

Identify code-wide changes in the 2026 NEC, including new and deleted articles.

Explain how NEC chapters interact and how specific permission is applied throughout the Code.

Recall revised Article 100 definitions, including terms related to metering centers, microgrids, limited energy systems, and power production sources.

Differentiate between energy storage systems, power control systems, interconnection equipment, GFCI types, receptacle outlets, and wiring devices.

Explain why Annex J was removed and describe the relationship between NEC requirements and manufacturer product instructions.

Recall general requirements for short-circuit current ratings, dissimilar metal connections, high-leg delta markings, and connections over 1,000 volts.

Describe revised requirements for arc-flash labeling, working space, equipment servicing, and reconditioning.

Ryan Jackson is a combination inspector in the Salt Lake City, Utah, area. He began his career as a carpenter while in high school, and began doing electrical work at the age of 18. At the age of 23 Ryan landed his first job as an electrical inspector, and subsequently became certified in building, plumbing, and mechanical inspection, as well as building and electrical plan review. Two years after becoming an inspector, he was approached by a friend in the area asking him to fill in at an electrical seminar for him. After his first class he was hooked, and is now a highly sought after seminar instructor. Ryan has taught in several states, and loves helping people increase their understanding of the Code.

 

He has been involved in writing and editing over 25 books on the National Electrical Code, and has taught the subject in multiple states and for multiple colleges and universities. He is self-employed as an NEC® consultant and inspector.

 
When Ryan isn’t working, he can often be found in his garage turning wood on his lathe, in his basement exercising, or any quiet place where he can dive into a book. He is also a rabid University of Utah football fan. Ryan married his high school sweetheart, Sharie, and they have two beautiful children together: Kaitlynn and Aaron.
