Gas Turbine Performance Enhancements

Gas Turbine Performance Enhancements

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RV-5396

SME: John White, P.E.

This course has been discontinued

This 1-hour interactive online course identifies and describes several methods of enhancing the performance of gas turbines (aka combustion turbines, or GTGs). By enhancing the performance, we mean increasing power output and /or improving the efficiency. The enhancements are described in terms of the hardware that can be included in the design or added as retrofits. Derivations of formulas are avoided, and while the bases of the enhancements are explained, this course does not delve very deeply into thermodynamics. This course includes a multiple-choice quiz at the end.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, the student will:

  • Be aware that there are several ways to increase power output and increase efficiency of gas turbines.
  • Be conversant in what some of these enhancements are.
  • Recognize advantages and disadvantages of certain enhancements.
  • Have an appreciation of the factors that go into the economic optimization of a combined cycle power plant design on the bases of the intended seasonal and life cycle load profiles, fuel costs, maintenance down time, climatic conditions, and others.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: John White, P.E.
Mr. White is registered as a mechanical engineer in 8 states. He has 32 years experience in the engineering, design, and construction of electric generating plants, from basic engineering to managing complex multi-disciplinary projects. He served for 13 years as a commissioned officer in the U. S. Navy and holds advanced degrees in engineering (MIT) and management (George Washington University). Mr. White is also knowledgeable in dispute resolution and litigation support, and expert witness testimony in power plant design and construction.
