The fundamentals of surveying can be very useful for the person with a technical background. Surveying principles can be useful for engineers, architects, and contractors. Surveying is used to produce precise descriptions, such as surveys and maps, of surface features of the Earth.

This 2-hour online course covers the basics of surveying and basic principles used in land surveying, establishment of property lines, positioning of buildings, roads, pipelines, etc. Surveying terminology as well as routine calculations and techniques for making field notes are covered in this course. This course is primarily for students who are not acquainted with surveying and is intended to provide the student with an awareness of surveying fundamentals.

Course Objectives

Completing this course will provide the basics of surveying concepts. You will become acquainted with basic surveying terminology and calculations involved in distance measurements, leveling circuits, and horizontal curves. After completing this course, you will have reviewed many of the fundamental surveying principles that are commonly used in land surveying and similar project activities including:

Jim possesses degrees in Civil & Environmental Engineering from Clarkson University in New York and Electrical Power Technology from Bismarck State College.
 
He has extensive industrial experience with 23 years in the pulp and paper industry and 12 years in institutional and pharmaceutical facility management.
 
His responsibilities have included engineering design, electrical and mechanical maintenance, and power plant utilities management.
 
Areas of expertise include HVAC design, commissioning and qualification, construction administration, and energy cost savings initiatives.
 
Jim’s credentials include being registered as a Professional Engineer and the Certified Energy Manager and Auditor certifications.
 
Jim is married and lives in Middletown, OH and has 4 married children.
