Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Global LNG Demand & Emerging Demand Markets

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG): Global LNG Demand & Emerging Demand Markets

1 hr. Online Course

Level: Intermediate

Item#: RVI-10970

Until the late 1990s, LNG was a niche industry operating mostly in the Asia-Pacific region. As the world entered the 21st century, however, global demand for LNG surged in a “perfect storm” created by the industrial and commercial boom around the world that resulted in an ever-growing appetite for all energy resources.
Between 2000 and 2008, the LNG industry entered a period of rapid growth with huge increases in supply coming from a growing number of LNG producing countries. However, between 2008 and 2009, the world endured the “worst recession since the Second World War” with demand for all energy dropping significantly. In 2010, as global economies appeared to be emerging from the recession, global natural gas demand resumed its long-term upward trajectory with the IEA projecting that natural gas will be the only fossil fuel for which demand is higher in 2035 than in 2008.

While the ultimate wildcard for all natural gas demand is the pace and strength of the global economic recovery, the long term outlook for natural gas and LNG remands strong. In this interactive online course, we will identify LNG demand drivers. We will examine existing and emerging Asia-Pacific and European importers, and discuss the reasons behind the increased LNG demand in Latin America. We will also consider the “natural gas puzzle” faced by the Middle East/North African region. Lastly, we will investigate the market trends causing the U.S. to shift from LNG importer to LNG exporter.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Identify LNG demand drivers, including global economic growth, emerging economies, environmental policies, regional market reforms, fuel switching, domestic gas production, and international pipeline supply
  • Identify existing and emerging Asia-Pacific and European importers
  • Discuss the reasons behind the increased LNG demand in Latin America
  • Explain the “natural gas puzzle” faced by the Middle East/North African region and how experts are working to solve it
  • Describe the market trends causing the U.S. to shift from LNG importer to LNG exporter

Susan L. Sakmar is licensed to practice law in California and has over 20 years experience working in a variety of legal, corporate, nonprofit, and academic environments. She began her professional career as an accountant for Chevron Corporation in San Francisco, California and left Chevron to pursue a law career. Prior to teaching, she was an attorney in the commercial litigation department of a major San Francisco firm where she represented clients in a variety of complex litigation cases. She has also served on a number of nonprofit environmental boards including Board Chair for the Jane Goodall Institute, founded by world-renowned chimpanzee expert Dr. Jane Goodall.

She is currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Houston Law Center where she teaches a course on Shale Gas & LNG. She also consults on various aspects of global gas markets and is working on a number of training projects related to LNG as well as several projects focused on the environmental and regulatory issues for global shale gas development. She holds an LL.M. from Georgetown University Law Center, Washington, DC, a J.D., cum laude, from the University of San Francisco School of Law, San Francisco, CA., and a business degree (B.Sc.) from the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO.

Her recent book, Energy for the 21st Century: Opportunities and Challenges for Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), was chosen as an Outstanding Academic Title for 2014 by Choice Magazine, a widely read publication by academic librarians. The book provides a comprehensive overview of the entire LNG value chain and analyzes the critical role LNG will play in the 21st century as the "glue" linking global gas markets.
