- Explain the historical development and foundational principles of the workers’ compensation system in the United States.
- List the various methods employers can use to acquire workers’ compensation insurance and understand the roles of brokers, carriers, and captives.
- Recall the criteria for compensability of workplace injuries and differentiate between injury and illness claims.
- List effective return-to-work strategies that support employee recovery while minimizing insurance costs.
- Recall injury mitigation and intervention techniques, including triage services and pre-hire assessments, to reduce workplace injury risks.
- Explain the legal interplay between workers’ compensation, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- Recall Florida-specific workers’ compensation laws, including employer requirements, coverage mandates, and enforcement mechanisms.
SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT: Dan Hannan
Dan Hannan is an Environmental, Health and Safety professional of 28 years. Dan is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), a designation awarded through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, as well as an OSHA-Authorized Outreach Trainer.
Dan’s professional safety career began in 1990 in the public sector working for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Over the last 28 years Dan has provided professional EHS services to the oil and gas, construction, manufacturing, and ethanol industries. His work has included project safety management, compliance auditing, risk assessment, training and program development.
