When taking on a concrete repair project, the first step is an important one - conducting a thorough evaluation. This 1-hour interactive online course begins with techniques for surveying the condition of the concrete, and reviews design and construction documentation, operation and maintenance records, instrumentation data, visual examination, methods of nondestructive testing and laboratory specimen analysis. The second part of the course identifies basic causes of deterioration, and covers typical symptoms, and recommendations for preventing further damage.
This course is the first in a series that provides guidance on evaluating the condition of the concrete in a structure. Although it is not required, this course will be most helpful if taken before the follow-up courses, 'Concrete 2: Repair Planning, Design, and Implementation' and 'Concrete Repair 3: Materials, Methods, and Maintenance'.
Course Objectives

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss how to survey an existing concrete structure for damage and deterioration
  • Describe the different causes of damage and identify the types and severity of deterioration
  • Describe non-destructive testing methods, both above and below water {and}
  • Describe the tests performed during laboratory analysis of a concrete sample

David Chitester Photo
David Chitester is a licensed P.E. in Michigan and Florida has over 35 years of experience. He graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1974. He also has an M.B.A that he received from Northern Michigan University in 1978. 
 
David Chitester began his career with Bechtel Power and Blount Brothers where he gained field construction experience on projects ranging from $150 million to $500 million. For more than 30 years, he has provided services essential to a balanced mix of public and private sector clients. Mr. Chitester's expertise has been applied to multi-million dollar hotels and resorts, industrial process plants, power generating facilities, office and commercial buildings. He is a licensed Professional Engineer and his background includes a number of years on active construction sites.

David Chitester is a professional trainer and founder of RedVector.com Inc. and Chitester Management Systems. He has authored numerous online courses and taught live classes on ethics, laws and rules, building codes and the ADA.
