This 2-hour interactive online course discusses the general concepts of masonry bearing wall design. This includes various structural systems, along with empirical and analytical design.

It is divided into four sections:

  • Masonry Structural Systems: Part I
  • Masonry Structural Systems: Part II
  • Empirical Design
  • Analytical Design

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, you will:

  • Understand the general concepts of masonry bearing wall design, including various structural systems as well as empirical and analytical design.
  • Know how the combined action of the floor, roof, and walls in resisting applied load affect masonry bearing wall structures.
  • Know how Lateral Load Distribution works for the safety of the structure and its occupants during high winds or even an earthquake.
  • Understanding of the Code Requirements for Masonry Structures to build a safe a durable structure.

Existing industry information has been assembled and correlated into a single, concise, and complete reference. Two sources used in the development of this course have been publications of the Brick Institute of America and the National Concrete Association, especially the BIA ''Technical Notes'' series and the NCMA ''TEK Bulletins.''
